32. enjoy this win, but let mike shanahan put it all in perspective. >> it's one game. we played well, being a good football team in their backyard. you got to feel good about yourself. enjoy it for 24 hours and it's just one game. we got 15 left. you take it a game at a time and i think our football team is mature enough to understand it was a nice win, but it's one. what you do over the course of the season dictate what type of team you are. you got to feel good go what you did, but when we come back on wednesday, we need to get started. >> reporter: the team yesterday unveiled the option and griffin's longest run of 12 yards came on the very second play from scrimmage. he showed poise. he was willing to take a hit, possibly on the biggest play of the game, an 88-yard touchdown pass complete to pierre garcon. griffin completed his first eight passes, finished anyone

teen of 26 for 322 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. he showed his athleticism. first possession of the 2nd quarter he fakes the handoff, heads left. eludes the offender and throws across his body to the other side of the field to fred davis for a 26-yard pickup and rg3 leaves the field a 40-32 winner in his nfl debut. it is something nobody is going to forget here, so good. a couple over updates. mike shanahan had a press conference and said rookie running back alfred morris solidified his starting role. we'll have more on him later, also rookie safety jordan bernstein out for the season, tore an acl, mcl and pcl, knick sundberg will be out next -- nick sundberg will be out next week with a broken arm and pierre garcon will test his foot wednesday to see if he can go sunday in st. louis. >> lots of updates, put rg3 off to a great start, fun to watch. thanks. of course, the big win yesterday fueled a fan frenzy

of sorts with some fans already talking super bowl. fox 5's bob barnard is in our newsroom with reaction to the start of the redskins season. bob? >> maureen, most redskins fans we met today say they're super excited about the way the team played yesterday but know it's a long season with lots of competition for the nfl championship and yet there are some fans already thinking about a return trip to new orleans. >> i honestly believe that if the team can stay healthy and as quick and poised as they were yesterday that the redskins are ready for a super bowl this year. >> reporter: yes, dorian payne is pretty excited but other fans of the burgundy and gold are trying not to get ahead of themselves. >> the game was good. i'm trying to stay calm, not get too excited. we always win in the beginning and then it gets it. >> reporter: you're not talking super bowl yet. >> not yet. >> we're used to losing, so when it's come time to win, hey, that's a blessing in disguise. >> reporter: have you been a

fan for a while? >> oh, my lord, we've been here for 37 years. so we've seen it all. >> reporter: the good and the bad. >> the good and bad and the ugly and we've seen a lot of ugly. >> reporter: but they looked pretty good in the big easy sunday with robert griffin, iii playing in his first nfl game. >> feeling very good about the way we played, the way we closed the game out. i'm very excited to have a new quarterback. i think that's what we was missing last year. >> reporter: we met tony boyd and other fans at the washington redskins store in bethesda where they say when the redskins win -- >> it bright understand my day, just made my whole week. i think when the redskins bring a win home, that excites the whole washington metropolitan area. >> i want to get a robert griffin, iii jersey, official nike jersey. and it's real hard to find, probably one of the highest commodities right now. >> i am very excited about this year. i think we're going to do really good. our defense is good. our offense looked awesome. we kept the ball go. i think this year will be
5:04 pm
really, really good. i've been a fan since i was little. me and my daddy watch every sunday. >> i've been a fan since 1970 when i came to the u.s., the first thing i turned on the tv was a redskins game and i've been a redskins fan since then. >> it was a great game. it actually gives you like oh, there's hope for this season. so that's exciting. >> even fans who are not thinking super bowl say they believe rg3 is the real deal and going to be fun to watch, maureen. >> indeed he is. bob barnard, thank you. so we're obviously be on not talking super bowl yet, but we thought it would be fun to ask our facebook fans what do you think about the skins chances this year? doug edgerton told us one game does not make a season. kenny said no one said super bowl but we played a hell of a game after everyone had us losing and byron flynn, omg, here we go again.
5:05 pm
skins win one game and they are super bowl bound. thank you all. here's a fun bit of trivia for you to talk about, the redskins tend to predict the outcome of the presidential elections. did you know this? it's known as the redskins rule. if the redskins win their last home game before the election day, the incumbent wins the white house and that means if the skins beat the panthers november 4th, president obama will win. the coincidence has held true in 17 of the last 18 president pall elections. the only time it did -- presidential elections. the only time it did not was back in 2004. speaking of the race for the white house, with the conventions over it is game on as mitt romney and president obama try to convince voters they have the right plan to turn our economy around. new numbers are out showing who is ahead now in the polls and in the race for campaign cash. got to have lots of that. fox's jennifer davis has a closer look at the race. >> reporter: at the u.s. capitol they've already started prepping for the inauguration
5:06 pm
building platforms, bleachers and a stage. even the voters have yet to decide who will address the nation from here. the latest gallup poll gives president obama a five-point edge nationwide but a new poll from north carolina shows virtually no bounce even after the democratic national convention was held there. >> we have always believed that this will be a very close race and that continues to be the president's belief. >> reporter: with less than two months to go the intense ground game heats up especially in battle ground states like ohio. >> he does not have a plan. his idea is that obamacare and a stimulus are all we need. i don't want obamacare and i don't want a stimulus like the last one. >> reporter: ohio say popular swing state for both campaigns with 18 electoral votes. >> the average of the poll does go show the president is ahead. it's very tight and it's going to stay that way. i really do think it will be all the way through november 6th.
5:07 pm
>> reporter: the ad blitz is also intensifying. the president pulled in 114 million in august compared to romney's 111 million, but the gop has more in their coffers overall. >> mitt romney has a ton of money for the general campaign he has not spent. >> reporter: the next big game changer could be the presidential debates. there are about three weeks until the first of three. in washington jennifer davis, fox news. turning to the developing story out of chicago where the city's schoolteachers have gone on strike leaving hundreds of thousands of children out of class, negotiations are back underway at this afternoon, but the strike is causing a lot of friction. reporter darlene hill is live in chicago. can you tell us what's the latest there right now? >> reporter: hey, maureen, this is the first strike in chicago in 25 years attracting a lot of national attention because we are talking about 350,000 students that didn't go to class today and, of course, this is happening in president
5:08 pm
barack obama's hometown. that strike was announced last night two hours before the midnight deadline. that left parents very little time to scramble for what ctu was calling their plan b, what to do with their children while they're at work. both the teachers union and the schools say the pay raises are reasonable, they're okay with that, but teachers don't want pay increases after this first year tied to student performance or the state's standardized tests. that's where it gets kind of sticky. negotiations are going on now and so is the big rally. we're joined here live with jeff murkinright now. talk a bit about what's going on. how do you feel? you've been in the system 13 years. how do you feel about being out here wearing red and showing solidarity and you know your students didn't go to class? >> one, i'm proud to support the union, but it was extremely disappointing to get up this morning and be in front of our school and marching around
5:09 pm
protesting as opposed to being able to work with our kids. >> reporter: how long do you think this will be going on? >> i would love to be back in the room tomorrow. we just started school. to have it interrupted like this, i wish that this could have been settled beforehand, but obviously there are other things going on. so definitely like to see it get settled. >> reporter: thank you. a lot of parents are feeling the same way in the chicago public school system, because the one thing about it knowing your children are in class is knowing they aren't on the streets and here in chicago we've had a lot of gang violence that's been getting national and international importance and as well as our homicide rate is up. >> thank you for that report tonight. several toddlers hospitalized today after they were stung by bees during a fire drill. it happened at the tempe manuel school in kensington -- temple
